The Second of Four Expected Indictments has Dropped

So, the second of four expected indictments against Trump has dropped. This time, Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s deliberate mishandling of classified and top secret documents is what is involved. (We’re still waiting for the Fulton County DA in Georgia to indict Trump on criminal interference in the Presidential election in Georgia, and Jack Smith’s further indictments of Trump relative to the January 6th insurrection).

Today’s particular indictment has not yet been unsealed, but reports indicate that it involves seven counts, including violation of the Espionage Act, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements. Investigators seized roughly 13,000 documents from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, nearly a year ago. He is due to appear in a Florida court next Tuesday, a day before his 77th birthday.

Trump responded with his usual understatement, an all-caps rant on Truth Social proclaiming himself to be TOTALLY INNOCENT, and once again claiming to be the victim of the “greatest witch hunt” ever. (I’ve repeatedly noted that Hillary Clinton was the victim of a much greater witch hunt relative to Benghazi and her email server, but whatever.)

Donald Trump has, in his own opinion, never made a mistake in his life. To wit:

  • Trump is innocent of all the charges that have ever been leveled against him.
  • Trump’s phone call with Brad Raffensberger in Georgia was “perfect.”
  • Trump is the “least racist” person that the news media has ever encountered, or so he proclaimed after Charlottesville VA.
  • Trump is the “least sexist” person in the United States, or so he proclaimed in a debate with Hillary.
  • Trump has “never met” E. Jean Carrol, who got a civil conviction against him for sexual assault.

Trump was a pretty extreme example of the Dunning-Kruger effect before he became President of the United States, but having become President seems to have caused him to lose touch with reality completely.

I don’t know how anyone can take this guy seriously anymore.

By the way, this case has been assigned to the Trump-appointed Judge Aileen Cannon, the same judge who was assigned to the case of Trump v. United States, where Trump asked the court to appoint a special master to review materials seized during the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago. Her rulings in that case were reversed twice by a unanimous appeals court.

So buckle up, everyone.
