Don’t Believe the Post-Facto Explanations

In the next few weeks and months we’re going to hear a lot of bloviating bullshit about why the Democrats lost and what they have to do differently.

Don’t believe any of it.

Trump won because (just like Barack Obama) he is a unicorn.

That’s why he won.

He is a tuning fork for people’s grievances, and he has an amazing ability to feed people’s grievances like pigs at a trough.

People didn’t vote for him because they support his “policies.” He has no policies.

People didn’t vote for him because of the economy. The economy is fine, at the moment.

People voted for him because they love the fact that he’s completely unaccountable to anyone — something they wish that they could be — and he never accepts responsibility for anything — something they wish they could do.

Men in particular, even black and Latino men, appear to love his “go fuck yourself” attitude about everything. Apparently that’s “hyper-masculine.”

Trump is uniquely and extraordinarily unapologetic. That is his defining characteristic. Maybe that’s what his supporters wish they could be.

I do agree with some prognosticators that many people in middle America feel “preached” to, and that they are tired of hearing how wrong or racist they are.

This is something that we need to address.

But not today.

For now the only thing that is going to happen is that the lines in the sand — the “Maginot” line in American politics — are going to get deeper and harder to breach. Middle America hates the East Coast and West Coast “elites.”

And now we hate them.

I hate them. I hate Trump voters. I’ll be totally honest about it.

You hate them? All of them?

No, not all of them. But I kind of hate them all today.

When Trump wrecks the economy, I just hope they suffer.

  • When some diabetic farmer in Iowa can no longer get health insurance for his pre-existing condition, I want to be able to say, “well, I guess you fucked yourself here, and not me.”
  • When some suburban housewife can no longer get elder care for her mother, I want to be able to say, “well, I guess you fucked yourself here, and not me.”
  • When some Latino man discovers that his undocumented cousin will be deported, I want to be able to say, “well, I guess you fucked yourself here, and not me.”
  • When some black dude cannot afford the downpayment on a house because of the oppressive amount of his student debt, I want to be able to say, “well, I guess you fucked yourself here, and not me.”

They broke America. They own it now.

Let them feel the consequences of their grievance-fueled miasma so that they can know what they did.

I would love to be able to feel that kind of Schadenfreude first hand. Of course, that will never happen. And if it did, I doubt I would have the balls to be that honest with them.

But a boy can dream, can’t he?

I’m going to be having many revenge fantasies in the months and (probably) years to come. A fat lot of good that’s going to do me.

They’re not backing down (and cognitive dissonance would not let them, in any case).

I’m not backing down.

And my allies are not backing down.

Either Trump will prove to be the disaster all (sane) people believe he will be, or I and my allies will be proven wrong (and not for the first time).  Maybe it will turn out that we were much too hysterical.

Maybe.

But today is not the day for making nice.

    Amen, Brother.
This is the most cogent commentary on the election that I’ve read so far.
    Keep up the god work.
