When Trump won back in 2016 I was enraged and incredulous. Now, in 2024, I’m just resigned and beyond disappointed. This is the beast that America just cannot kill. Our collective obsession with this man seems to have no ending.

First of all, let’s acknowledge that this is not about mistakes made by Kamala Harris’ campaign. She ran just about the perfect campaign. This is not her fault.

Second, this is not about Joe Biden being old. Trump is almost as old and clearly just as brain-addled, if not more.

This is not about the price of eggs. By any measure, the economy of the United States is better off than the economy of just about any other nation, and is in a remarkably strong position.

No, this seems to be about America being a grievance-fueled nation, who loves the fact that there are no guardrails around this guy, and that he can say and do whatever the fuck he wants without ever suffering any consequences.

That’s really the only explanation that is left. 

Now, we have to wait for Trump to destroy the economy and go on his grievance-fueled vengeance tour, and  hope that in his second go-round he fucks things up so badly that the Republican party will finally be broken.

But a lot of people are going to get hurt along the way.

It’s not going to be me, because I’m rather privileged in this society. I mean, unless we have another great depression, in which case all bets will be off. But a lot of people are going to get hurt along the way, and I will have to see this guy’s smug mug and hear his endless procession of self-praise for another four years, so I’m probably going to have to impose a news blackout on myself.
