Over the next 24 months my political donations will not go to the Democratic National Committee, or to MoveOn.org, or to the Movement Voter PAC, or to Reuben Gallego or to Rebecca Cooke or to Debbie Mucarsel-Powell or to any other individual candidate. No, my money is going to be going to the American Civil Liberties Union, which is going to be at the front lines of many many fights against the Trump administration.
I hope that they’re going on a hiring spree.
Founded in 1920, the ACLU is a completely mature organization that provides legal assistance in cases where it considers civil liberties at risk. Technically, the ACLU consists of two separate but closely affiliated nonprofit organizations, a 501(c)(3) foundation that accepts tax deductible donations, and a 501(c)(4) group that can engage in political lobbying.
The ACLU sometimes takes very unpopular positions in the defense of liberty, such as when they defended the American Nazi’s right to march in the village of Skokie, a majority-Jewish town with many Holocaust survivors.
In any case, they are going to have to take a page out of the Trump playbook, and embroil everything in litigation now. Trump proved, time and again, that you can slow everything down to a crawl by suing about it, and now our side is going to have to do the same thing.
I’ve already donated $100 today to their Legal Defense Fund, and I will probably be donating on a monthly basis.
So pack away your jokes about lawyers, because lawyers are going to be your front line heroes now in the fight to keep the Trump administration from doing one illegal thing after another.
