Why do Republicans want to be asleep instead of woke?

I’m not quite sure why Republicans are trying so hard to make “woke” into a bad word, something to avoid.

Being woke means that you are awake.

The opposite of awake is asleep.

So Republicans all want to be asleep?

It would certainly go with their current brand, which mostly consists of lying without compunction.

“Woke” has now made it’s a way into dictionaries, including the Oxford English Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

Definition of woke

(Entry 1 of 2)
chiefly US slang
: aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice) But we will only succeed if we reject the growing pressure to retreat into cynicism and hopelessness.

… We have a moral obligation to “stay woke,” take a stand and be active; challenging injustices and racism in our communities and fighting hatred and discrimination wherever it rises.— Barbara Lee

Definition of woke (Entry 2 of 2)

past tense and past participle of wake

Personally, I would be proud to be woke, and I hope that I am woke at least to some extent. Sorry, I don’t want to be asleep, especially in the world as it is today.

About a1skeptic

A disturbed citizen and skeptic. I should stop reading the newspaper. Or watching TV. I should turn off NPR and disconnect from the Internet. We’d all be better off.
