Well, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Alex Jones was walloped today with almost $1 billion in damages. Jones — who got on the stand and told the court that he’s “done apologizing” — has now been hit twice with massive jury awards, although this one is much larger than the one recently in Texas.
And he’s still facing another lawsuit coming up back in Texas.
I had been wondering for years why these people didn’t sue Alex Jones for defamation. I mean, what he did was unimaginably outrageous.
Imagine that you are the parent of a six year old, and shortly before Christmas your child is murdered in school. Along with 20 other children. Your grief is overwhelming. (Many people have said that nothing is more wrenching than losing a child at a young age.)
But that’s not all. Some blowhard with an astoundingly large following gets on the radio and calls you a crisis actor. He calls you out by name. He informs his listeners what your home address is. And you start to get death threats.
You move your home, but the death threats keep coming. And this happens for ten years!
I’ve been praying for years that Jones would get hit with a verdict like this. And that somebody would just put him out of business.
He will appeal. Of course. For years.
He’s also been very busy hiding his assets.
These parents may never see any of this money, or maybe they will see some of this money another 10 years from now.
But at least Jones isn’t just skating free anymore, like his buddy Donald Trump. Just as the legal noose around Trump is slowly tightening, now Jones knows (at least) that he can’t just say whatever the fuck he wants without any consequences.
And don’t tell me about freedom of speech. There are lots of limitations on freedom of speech that already exist, such as on child pornography. That’s also why you “can’t shout ‘fire’ in a crowded theater.”
I hope Jones spends years in court while the plaintiffs come after his hidden assets, and that he finally experiences some real pain.
As it is, I don’t know how this guy sleeps at night.
