To all those people out there protesting or demanding that the Electoral College not elect Donald Trump, I’m afraid that you’re a day late and a dollar short. Especially if you didn’t vote in this election.
All the protests out there are nice and all, but they’re not going to change a thing. Do you think that Donald Trump or the Republican establishment care even a little bit?
The petitions to the electoral college to keep them from voting for Donald Trump are nice and all, but it’s an absurd idea. Aside from the fact that it would be a complete break with electoral norms, it would also literally create a civil war between the supporters of the Donald and the rest of us. [1] Then we really would have the “rigged” election that the Donald had always claimed it would be.[2]
The demands to abolish the electoral college are nice and all, except that it isn’t going to happen, and the day is going to come where the popular vote goes against us but the electoral college elects one of ours. At that point you’re going to be very happy to have the electoral college. It can swing in either direction.
And there’s one other thing I’ve been wanting to say all week:
If you’re out there protesting now and you didn’t bother to vote on November 8th, you deserve the presidency of Donald Trump.
If you support black lives matter and you didn’t bother to vote on November 8th, you deserve the presidency of Donald Trump.
If you’re a child-bearing age woman and you didn’t bother to vote on November 8th, you deserve the presidency of Donald Trump.
If you’ve ever been unjustly hassled by the police and you didn’t bother to vote on November 8th, you deserve the presidency of Donald Trump.
If you think global warming is a real threat and you didn’t bother to vote on November 8th, you deserve the presidency of Donald Trump.
If you’re queer or transgendered or just friends with someone queer or transgendered and you didn’t bother to vote on November 8th, you deserve the presidency of Donald Trump.
If you care about civil rights even a little bit and you didn’t bother to vote on November 8th, you deserve the presidency of Donald Trump.
If you like the Consumer Financial Protection Board and think Dodd-Frank was a step in the right direction and you didn’t bother to vote on November 8th, you deserve the presidency of Donald Trump.
In sum, if you didn’t want to see the Captain of the Clown Car, Donald J. Trump as the next President of the United States and you didn’t bother to vote on November 8th, I have – and I know this sounds cruel – nothing but contempt for you. It means that you really are a moron and you just don’t get it.
I realize that shaming you is unlikely to motivate you, but at this point I no longer give a fuck. Like the alcoholic who can’t stop drinking, there must be some way to get through to you. If you don’t understand how important voting is to the body politic, then you don’t really deserve the democracy that you live in. Sorry.
[1] I do like the petition that asks the electors of the Electoral College to demand that the Donald release his tax returns to that they can do “due diligence” on his qualifications, although I’m not holding my breath on that either.
[2] I realize that there is an argument that this actually has been a rigged election, and that much of the credit/blame for that can go to James Comey of the FBI and Julian Assange from Wikileaks, and I don’t deny that proposition. James Comey shouldn’t just be fired from the FBI, he should be strung up by his balls. Same for that sexually assaulting coward, Julian Assange.
Thanks for the link to the petition on the tax returns. The post is well written. I think the ‘president elect’ is right. The election is rigged with may players involved. Really sad for the American people. Be well and enjoy this day!
