Some of you may have heard the news that yesterday the Trump campaign fired Corey Lewandowski. It appears that he ran afoul of Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, among others. The others including Paul Manafort, the guy brought in to run the Trump campaign now that the general election campaign is essentially upon us.
But weep not for Corey Lewandowski. The guy is a first class prick. Here’s really all you need to know about the man:
- In 1999, while working for Ohio Congressman Bob Ney, Lewandowski brought a loaded handgun in a laundry bag into the Longworth House Office Building.
- In the 2002 re-election campaign of New Hampshire Senator Robert C. Smith against John E. Sununu, Lewandowski suggested that the Republican stalwart Sununu, who is of Lebanese descent, had divided loyalties in fighting terrorism.
Of course, Lewandowski is best known for his run in with Michelle Fields, a reporter for Breitbart News, who claimed that she was assaulted by Lewandowski when she tried to ask Trump a question at a news conference in Jupiter, Florida, on March 8th.
Ney was convicted of federal corruption as part of the Abramoff scandal, and Lewandowski wrote a letter to the judge asking for leniency, calling Ney a “surrogate father” to him.
Lewandowski told a reporter he would be interested to know whether anyone associated with Hamas had attended a fundraising event for Sununu, and then cited contributions made by Washington lawyer George Salem to Sununu. It turns out that Salem, who chaired Arab Americans for Bush-Cheney during the 2000 Bush/Cheney campaign, was the attorney for the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, which had its assets frozen by the U.S. government in 2001 on suspicion of ties to Hamas.
On March 29, 2016, Lewandowski was charged with one count of simple battery, but the charges were later dismissed.
