Why Employers Shouldn’t Provide our Health Insurance

If you want to know why it’s not a good idea for us to get our health insurance through our employers, look no further than Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, the case that was argued yesterday before the Supreme Court on whether the Hobby Lobby stores need to provide coverage for contraceptives in their health insurance plans. Of course, pensions also used to be provided by employers until so many of them went broke that President Roosevelt and the Congress enacted Social Security. Instead of Obamacare, we should have done the right thing and gone single payer on health care. Then everyone would be covered regardless of employment status, and we wouldn’t have these kinds of arguments before the Supreme Court. Keep in mind that Hobby Lobby isn’t objecting to coverage for abortions, God forbid. No, we’re just talking about contraception here. And still, this is the debate we’re having.

A disturbed citizen and skeptic. I should stop reading the newspaper. Or watching TV. I should turn off NPR and disconnect from the Internet. We’d all be better off.
